A project* by Mayekawa Mfg. Co., Ltd. to improve energy efficiency at a beer brewery in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Laos) is officially registered as a CDM project by the CDM Executive Board (UNFCC) on April 7, 2007. This project is the first UN-approved CDM project in the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry in Japan.
A joint venture in conjunction with Proact International Inc. in Tokyo covers the Vientiane brewery plant belonging to Laos’ only beer company, Lao Brewery Co., Ltd.. Mayekawa is tasked with primary responsibility for engineering the project.
Mayekawa proposed changing the existing heating method based on oil-fired boilers to a new method using motor-driven steam compressors, taking into account the electricity supply situation in Laos.
The following energy-saving systems are installed at the plant, reducing total energy consumption at the beer brewery by 30% and reducing annual fuel oil consumption by 2,400 tons.
1 Steam recovery and recompression system.
2 Heat pump installation for sterilization process.
3 Boiler system fueled by methane gas generated by wastewater processing.
This project is projected to achieve energy savings corresponding to a reduction of 34,000 tons of oil, reducing greenhouse gases by 35,000 tons during the project’s 10-year CER (Certified Emissions Reduction) period from 2007 to 2017.
Mayekawa also plans to introduce a similar energy-saving plant at a new beer brewery currently under construction in the city of Pakse in southern Laos.
