■1924~1955■
Mayekawa Mfg. Co., Ltd., was founded in 1924 by the late Kisaku Mayekawa with the aim of designing and installing ice-making facilities and cold storage plants. In those days, the industrial refrigeration compressors, the core component used in those plants, were imported from abroad. In 1934, Mayekawa turned his attention to developing domestic production of industrial vertical compressors and the company began manufacturing series compressors in 1955. In the latter half of 1950’s, Mayekawa established six of its own ice making plants in Tokyo and eventually became the supplier of more than 50 percent of all block ice demand in Tokyo.
■1955~1963■
In 1956, Mayekawa commenced manufacturing a prototype high-speed multi-cylinder reciprocating compressor and began mass production of MYCOM Model A Series & Model B Series reciprocating compressors in 1958. “MYCOM,” the brand name for the company’s industrial compressors, was really established on an international level during the 1960’s. In 1960, Mayekawa received an order for 12 sets of refrigeration equipment for 12,000 ton cold storage facilities in the Soviet Union. All the equipment was supplied within a single year. In 1963, Mayekawa completed construction of its own 7,000 ton cold storage in the Tsukishima district of Tokyo using then state-of-the-art technology, i.e. an automatically controlled ammonia liquid pump system, marking the start of an era of automatically controlled large-scale cold storage facilities in Japan .
■1964~1973■
Overseas production of MYCOM compressors started earlier than was expected as Mayekawa established subsidiary firms in a large number of countries one after another. MAYEKAWA DE MEXICO, S.A. and MAYEKAWA DO BRASIL REF. LTDA., both founded by Mayekawa, began production of MYCOM industrial reciprocating refrigeration compressors in 1964 and in 1968, respectively. Mayekawa began shipping bare reciprocating compressors from Japan to MAYEKAWA U.S.A. INC. and N.V. MYCOM EUROPE S.A. in 1967 and in 1971, respectively. In Japan, Mayekawa began production of MYCOM industrial screw compressors in 1966 and delivered Japan’s first heat pump system using one of those screw compressors in 1970. In that year Mayekawa moved its reciprocating compressor factory from Koto-ku, Tokyo to Moriya City in Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo.
■1974~1979■
In the latter half of the 1970’s, Mayekawa reached its stride in the development of new applications using refrigeration systems. Many new products and new markets were developed during this period. The “DEHUMA” ,an industrial dehumidifier, was developed to supply dry air to the cupolas used in the metal casting industry. Production of steel belt freezers for the frozen foods industry was commenced and helium gas compressor units were manufactured for cryogenic research work such as that done at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, in the U.S.
■1980~1995■
With our first three independent subsidiary companies founded in Hachinohe City, Misaki City and Yaizu City in 1980 as a start, Mayekawa has been growing year by year through the establishment of independent domestic subsidiary companies. At one time these numbered more than one hundred. In 1982, Mayekawa increased its capital to 1,000,000,000 Japanese. yen.
■1996~2002■
In 1996, Mayekawa’s natural working fluid (NH3) refrigeration systems were adopted for all ice rinks, curling rinks and bobsleigh/luge tracks of the 1988 Nagano Olympic Winter Games in Japan. As the games were to be held under the theme of an environmentally-friendly Olympic winter games, Mayekawa-developed refrigeration equipment using NWFs such as NH3 and CO2, notable for ozone layer preservation and protection against global warming, was chosen. In 2001, Mayekawa commenced sales of the “THERMO-SHUTTER,” a unique air curtain for cold storage facilities that contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions because of its extremely high chilled-air shut-off efficiency. Mayekawa has adopted environmentally-friendly products for its own facilities and, in 2004, constructed a large-scale ice making facility in Moriya City, Ibaraki-Prefecture employing an NH3/CO2 two-stage compression system.
■2003~ the present■
In 2005, Mayekawa introduced the “MYCOM ECO CUTE”, a high efficiency 75kW class industrial/semi-industrial hot water supply heat pump package using a natural working fluid (CO2). Currently Mayekawa’s business activities extend to energy related fields, food processing and very low temperature applications. Mayekawa is truly a diversified products group. The company is able to perform feasibility studies, create overall plans and design, develop, produce, construct facilities and carry out after-sales service. Recently, in the field of food processing, Mayekawa’s mission has been not only to provide cooling/freezing equipment but also to collaborate with clients in remodeling their food production systems considering the famous ‘Five A’s’ of the Japanese food industry ━ Aji (Taste), Anshin (Assurance), Anzen (Safety), Anka (Low Price), and Antei (Stability). In addition its contributions to the food processing industry, Mayekawa supplies products to many other applications such as car manufacturing, chemical product manufacturing, snow melting for roads and sidewalks, air-conditioning for buildings, recreation facilities, etc. Mayekawa is enthusiastically promoting environmental protection activities, especially the supply of global warming protection products using natural working fluids such as NH3 and CO2 and these activities are being accelerated throughout the world.
